What is causing my Stomach to Bloat?

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,

Q: I have frequent bloating of the stomach? Can this be black magic? What are the other causes of a bloated stomach? Are there any natural remedies to overcome this problem?

A: Bloating is usually a sign that your food is not being digested properly. When gas doesn’t pass through belching and flatulence, it builds up in the stomach and intestines causing them to bloat. Sometimes, bloating can also cause abdominal pain, however passing gas or having a bowel movement may relieve this.

Bloating, burping and passing gas are natural and are usually caused by swallowed air. Stomach pain is often related to gas or indigestion due to poor food choices. Common causes of stomach bloating are:

  • Overeating
  • Low stomach acid (due to poor diet)
  • Lack of sleep
  • Food intolerances/allergies
  • Eating late at night
  • IBS
  • Gas producing foods/drinks
  • Constipation

Gas forming foods should be avoided as much as possible, such as beans, cabbage family vegetables, raw onions, oily, starchy and high protein foods. A diet of fatty foods can also cause a build up of fat cells to develop through the body thus causing bloating. Eating and drinking slowly, avoiding fizzy drinks, minimising smoking and treating heartburn can reduce bloating.

In most circumstances, herbs found in the kitchen can relieve the bloating naturally. A simple remedy to overcome bloating of the stomach is to prepare a concoction to take – simply add 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds, 3 cardamoms, half a teaspoon of crushed mint leaves and half a teaspoon of ginger to one cup of water and let it simmer for 10 minutes on low heat. Cool this down and take one cup twice daily.

Another option is to use curry leaves in your food to prevent gas and bloating. Curry leaves have been used for centuries in India, as the leaves, the bark and the root of the curry plant are used commonly as a tonic, stimulant or anti-flatulent.

Very rarely is bloating caused by black magic, however if you are having doubts then please book an appointment with the Shaykh by contacting us on 07387437184 (Mon-Thurs between 11am to 12pm).
