Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,
It is narrated that Hazrat Usman (رضي الله عنه) used to visit the graveyard often and used to cry so much by remembering death. All the Sahabahs remembered death often. It is narrated in a Hadith that the grave says everyday “I am the house of worms, I am a dark hut”. When a pious person is entered into the grave, the grave says “Come here, from all the people that have walked on me, you were the dearest to me. Today you have been given to me and you will see how I deal with you”. Then, the grave is stretched so much as far as the eye can see. The grave then says “You have passed your test, go to sleep and you will be woken up for Judgement day again”. Then the dead person is put to sleep.
Oppositely, when an impious person is entered into the grave, the grave says “You are not welcome into the grave. From all the people that have walked upon me, I hated you the most. Today you have been given to me and you will see how I deal with you”. After this, one side of the grave will attach to the other side of the grave and the Human body is crushed together. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) demonstrated this by showing two fingers joined together.
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) spoke about death and explained how we should look after ourselves before any illness befalls us. From a personal experience, I encountered a Haji who was disabled and he continued to perform Tawaaf whilst crying. I asked the Haji if everything was okay. The Haji replied “I’ve wasted my life; when I had health I didn’t undertake acts of worship and now that I am disabled I can’t even perform Tawaaf. When my legs were healthy, I never did Sajdah to my Lord and today when I can’t even stand on my two feet, I have to sit on a chair and read my Salah; I’ve never been able to go into Sajdah”. So, Human beings must look after their health before illness befalls them. Accordingly, they should spend their life worshipping Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى). One must remove the love of this world and materialistic things out of their heart. If the love of the World enters one’s heart, then slowly slowly, the individual becomes materialistic and yearns for the things in this world. The individual also forgets that they will die one day.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) give us the strength to overcome our desires in this World. Ameen.
