Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu,
Q: What are the Jinn? Are there different types and categories of Jinn? Where do Muslim and Non-Muslim Jinn live? Is there a Dua to seek the protection of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) from Jinn?
A: Jinn are Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى)’s creation that were created hundreds and thousands of years before Humans. There are many different types of Jinn; one of them being Iblees who was a powerful Jinn and ruled the world. Some of the other types of Jinn are:
- Pure Jinn known as Genie in Arabic
- Normal Jinn whom live in every person and are called Hamzad or Qareen
- Arwa Jinn which trouble children
- Shayateen Jinn which are the most gruesome and trouble worthy
- Ifrit Jinn which are unstoppable, are very mischievous and go through any barriers
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) narrated that there are three different categories of Jinn; one which fly in the wind, another which look like reptiles, insects, snakes and scorpions, and the third which live in the form of beggars and live in tents and huts.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) states “I created Jinn and Mankind only that they may worship Me” (Al Dhariyat 56). Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) also states “And among us (the Jinns) there are righteous folk and among us there are from that, we are sects having different rules” (Jinn 11).
Every individual among the Sons of Adam has a Jinn who has been appointed to be his constant companion (Qareen). Ibn Masood (رضي الله عنه) said that the Messenger of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) stated “There is not one of you who does not have a Jinn appointed to be his constant companion.” They said “And you too, O Messenger of Allah?” He (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said “Me too, but Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) has helped me and he has submitted, so that he only helps me to do good.” (Reported by Muslim, 2814)
Non-Muslim Jinn live in toilets, bathrooms, dunghills, garbage dumps and graveyards, whilst Muslim Jinn live in Mosques, Madrassa and any other Islamic places. Ans Ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) said when the Messenger of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) entered the toilet, he would say:
We must all try and recite this Dua before entering the toilet, as this will provide us with the protection of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى). We will discuss more about symptoms, causes, treatment and prevention methods of Jinn possessions in future posts.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَ تَعَالَى) grant us protection from all that is bad for us.
